Meet Ben

Ben’s a talented golfer who usually played off around 14. But over the last year or two, that number had crept up to 19.
A couple of months ago we decided to start some coaching to help him get back to where he belongs — and enjoy his golf again.
Recognising the Patterns
Ben had a couple of tendencies which will be familiar to many golfers:
Internal focus: When something went wrong, his first thought was “What did I do wrong with my swing?” That kind of thinking often leads to hesitant, uncertain swings — too many thoughts running through the mind while standing over the ball.
Protecting the score: He’d often play a great front nine, only to lose momentum on the back nine, trying to “hold on” rather than play freely and pursue a great round.
These are incredibly common habits among golfers, but they can quietly erode both confidence and enjoyment.
Coaching Focus: Two Key Areas
We began our coaching out on the golf course with two clear priorities.
🎯 1. Becoming More Target-Oriented
The first shift was about intent. Ben worked on being much more focused on his target — knowing exactly where he wanted the ball to start and where he wanted it to finish.
We focused on trusting his natural shot shape and allowing the swing to flow more freely.
This simple mindset change had an immediate impact: faster swing speed, cleaner strikes, and visibly more confident body language.
🧠 2. Reviewing Each Shot Objectively
Next, we introduced a simple post-shot scoring system that Ben used to review every shot objectively.
It helped him:
Understand the difference between a poor shot and a small miss
Be kinder to himself
Stay present, focusing on one shot at a time rather than protecting a score
This approach kept him calmer and more consistent — especially over those critical back-nine holes.
Taking It Indoors: Fine-Tuning with TrackMan
Our next step was indoors at Simz Golf, using TrackMan technology to deepen our understanding of Ben’s game.
The data confirmed what we expected but also helped us iron out some issues Ben was facing with low point control.
A few simple adjustments to Ben's setup quickly sharpened his strike, improved distance and consistency.
The session also helped him understand how each club behaves differently in terms of shot shape and flight. That insight made it much easier for Ben to pick the right targets and manage his game strategically on the course.
The Results
The progress has been fantastic:
✅ Playing better and scoring lower✅ Striking the ball more cleanly and powerfully✅ Understanding his game more deeply✅ Most importantly — enjoying golf again!
Ben recently won his Captain’s Away Day, taking home first prize. His handicap has already dropped from 19 to 17 and is still trending down.
